Yesterday while the anticipated heavy snowfall and whiteout conditions were looming, all flights coming in and out of MacArthur Airport were cancelled. Travelers hoping to use Southwest, US Airways, Pen Air, and Allegiant Air, were grounded for the time being. Those travelers can now breathe a sigh of relief though as the Central Islip airport is set to resume service by the afternoon.

Southwest will be the first to get back on schedule. Planes will be arriving at 11:10 a.m. and will start departing at 11:40 a.m. Next is U.S. airways with an 11:20 a.m. arrival time and 11:50 departure.

Those looking to take PenAir will have to wait until later in the evening at 6:40 p.m for their flights to resume.

Despite the announcement, the airport still advises to check with air carriers for flight information.

With snowfall totals reaching close to 12 inches in some parts of Long Island,
MacArther Airport isn’t the only means of travel attempting to run for their customers. As of 12:01 a.m. on January 3rd, the Long Island Rail Road will be running on a weekend schedule.

As of now there is no train service between Greenport and Ronkonkoma. Bus service will instead be provided. The West Hempstead branch is also suspended due to weather. The last train out of there this morning from the Atlantic Terminal was at 12:15 a.m. If travel is necessary commuters can still use the Hempstead, Lynbrook, Valley Stream, or Merillon Avenue stations.

The LIRR warns commuters  to be cautious when boarding and exiting trains, while also being asked to patiently expect delays.
