AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING An Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for the following counties: Nassau and Suffolk. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The First Squad reports the arrest of a Westbury man for Attempted Murder that occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 10:15 p.m. in Uniondale.

Uniondale, NY - January 8th, 2015 - The First Squad reports the arrest of a Westbury man for Attempted Murder that occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 10:15 p.m. in Uniondale.

According to detectives,  the defendant Alvin Smith, 45 of Roman Avenue approached his former girlfriend as she walked on Nassau Road and stabbed her multiple times in the neck and shoulder area with a large knife. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was admitted for treatment of her injuries.

First Precinct Officers responded to the scene and located Smith a short time later on Hill Street and placed him under arrest. The knife was recovered at the scene. The victim has a valid order of protection against Smith.

Smith is charged with Murder 2nd degree (Attempt), Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree, Criminal Contempt  1st degree, and Aggravated Criminal Contempt. He will be arraigned on Thursday January 8, 2015 at First District Court in Hempstead.
