Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: Nassau, Suffolk. until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

New York Blood Center (NYBC) is partnering with the New York Islanders for their annual blood drive on January 16th from 1:30pm to 6:00pm at UBS Arena (2400 Hempstead Turnpike, Hempstead, NY 11003) in the Acrisure Great Hall. All presenting donors will receive a voucher for two complimentary tickets to a 2023-2024 regular season New York Islanders home game. The New York Islanders have been a longtime supporter of NYBC as the team has been hosting blood drives since 2000 and these blood drives have resulted in a total of 2,195 blood donations thus far. This event will be the 22nd blood drive the hockey team has hosted with NYBC to help save lives in the region.

January, which is National Blood Donor Month, is always a difficult time to collect blood donations, as school breaks, family vacations, holiday travel and cold weather all contribute to making blood donations less of a priority. Additionally, NYBC has seen a 25% drop in donations in the last three weeks, resulting in 5,000 fewer donations and prompting a blood emergency declaration.

The New York Islanders are asking that all media RSVP a minimum of 24 hours in advance. Media will not be able to enter the blood drive without prior authorization.
