William Floyd High School senior basketball forward Jawuan Smith was honored before the January 8 victory over Riverhead for reaching 1,000 career points! He reached this milestone on January 4 in a game against Half Hollow Hills East as part of a nine-point, 12-rebound effort.

Jawuan is the first Colonial to cross the 1,000-point threshold since Devonte Dixon last achieved this feat during the 2014-15 season.

Following the pregame ceremony, Jawuan scored a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a dominant 71-39 victory that continued the Colonials’ winning ways. The Colonials now sit atop League I with a 10-3 overall record (6-0 in League play).

“Scoring 1,000 points in your career means you were able to take care of your body and stay injury free –  play through pain, discomfort, and fight through adversity,” said Will Slinkosky, head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team.

Coach Slinkosky added that this milestone also means that Jawuan put in the extra time to perfect his craft in practice and in the offseason, built relationships and mutual trust with his teammates, studied and listened to scouting reports, understood defenses, and relied on his teammates and coaching staff to help put him in the best position to be successful.

“These are the exact reasons why Jawuan Smith was able to accomplish this honor. Our coaching staff, teammates and especially Coach D are extremely proud,” added Coach Slinkosky.

Jawuan is averaging a double-double each game for the second consecutive season. Prior to this season, he was named among Newsday’s top 100 boys’ basketball players on Long Island for the second consecutive year and has previously been named an All-League, All-Conference and All-County player in addition to being chosen for Newsday’s 2024 All-Long Island First Team.

Congratulations, Jawuan!
