News 12+ Presents Discover Long Island
Happy New Year and welcome back to Discover Long Island. It’s that chilly time of year where we’re looking for indoor activities to keep the entire family entertained. Here are some of our favorite family-friendly spots that will get you out of hibernation mode and keep both the kids and adults happy all winter long.
Head over to Museum Row where you can find several world-class museums, including the Long Island Children’s Museum which offers over 14 interactive exhibits plus live theater, art spaces and daily activities to provide hours of fun for children of all ages. Step inside enormous bubbles or climb around in the museum’s dedicated climbing sculptures and TotSpot playground for the ultimate family day indoors.
Right next door you can dive into Long Island’s instrumental contributions to the Nation’s Aerospace history at the Cradle of Aviation. With over 75 air and space crafts and 30 hands-on exhibits including an actual Apollo Lunar Module made on Long Island by the Grumman Aerospace Corporation which successfully landed 12 men on the moon.
But with over 120-miles of coastline and thriving aquaculture and marine life, The Long Island Aquarium remains one of Long Island’s top family-friendly attractions year-round. 2020 marks the aquarium’s 20th anniversary with exciting new indoor and outdoor exhibits to explore. Guests can enjoy dozens of experimental adventures including diving with sharks, penguin and animal encounters, tour boats, and snorkeling. Get out of the cold with winter activities that include the beautiful Butterflies, Bugs & Birds, an 86-degree exhibit that features various species of butterflies flying around freely, and birds and bugs from around the world. The aquarium also the home to the New York Marine Rescue Center, a hospital that rehabilitates marine mammals and endangered sea turtles that the team rescues when found stranded on our beaches.
