Town of Brookhaven Demolishes Zombie House on Silas Carter Road in Manorville
On January 23, Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig (right) was joined by Supervisor Daniel Panico (left) at the demolition of a burned out “zombie house” located at 126 Silas Carter Road in Manorville.
Late in 2023, the house sustained heavy fire damage after squatters moved in, creating a safety hazard for the neighborhood. The house was demolished in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. Suffolk County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner.
Councilwoman Dunne Kesnig said, “Residents who live near this house asked that it be demolished, and the property cleaned up. I am happy that we were able to remove this dangerous blight from the neighborhood. I will continue to work with our Law Department to crack down on owners who allow their property to have a negative impact on the community.
