AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following areas: All five boroughs of New York City, and Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a Fatal Vehicular Auto Accident that occurred on January 27, 2014 at 9:23 pm in Valley Stream.

Valley Stream, NY - January 28th, 2014 - Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a Fatal Vehicular Auto Accident that occurred on January 27, 2014 at 9:23 pm in Valley Stream.

According to detectives, while traveling westbound on West Merrick Road near Boden Avenue, the 19 year old male driver of his 2000 Toyota, which was also occupied by a 15 year old female and her 13 year old sister, strikes another westbound 2009 Toyota driven by a 31 year old male that was making a U-turn in front of them. The collision causes the 2000 Toyota to continue westbound on W. Merrick Road where it strikes multiple parking meters and a utility pole before coming to a rest in the eastbound lanes of traffic and all the occupants are transported to area hospitals. The 15 year old female suffered fatal injuries and is pronounced deceased by a staff physician at 10:31 pm. Her sister, who was ejected from the vehicle, is listed in critical condition with severe head and body trauma. The 19 year old driver was also admitted for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the 2009 Toyota was not injured during the accident.

Both vehicles were impounded for brake and safety checks and there appears, at this time, to be no criminality involved in the accident. The investigation in this accident continues.
