AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING An Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for the following counties: Nassau and Suffolk. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Reports: Man Arrested After Fleeing Scene of Fatal North Patchogue Vehicle Crash

Eduardo Aponte of Mastic, 29, was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death, police say.

SCPD arrested Eduardo Aponte of Mastic, 29, for a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian.

North Patchogue, NY - January 29, 2017 - Suffolk County Police arrested a Mastic man for a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in North Patchogue, New York on Saturday, January 27.
 
Luke Figat was attempting to cross eastbound Sunrise Highway, just west of Route 112, at approximately 3 a.m. when he was struck by three vehicles. One of the vehicles fled the scene. Figat, 25, of Medford, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The drivers who remained at the scene were not injured.
 
An investigation by Fifth Squad and Major Case Unit detectives led to the arrest of Eduardo Aponte, 29, of Mastic, who was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death. Aponte will be held overnight at the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at First District Court in Central Islip.
