Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Suffolk County Acting Police Commissioner Robert Waring was joined by the family of Tom Smith as the museum was renamed and dedicated to the museum founder during a ceremony on January 27 at 11:30 a.m. at Suffolk County Police Headquarters in Yaphank.
Tom Smith served with the SCPD and then-Village of Babylon Police Department for a combined 42 years. A historian at heart, Smith was instrumental in opening the police museum doors on January 25, 1985. He was involved in its curation to ensure it provided an educational experience of the department’s history to museum visitors.
