After a series of dangerous traffic incidents – including a fatal hit-and-run crash on Broadway in Valley Stream – Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) is continuing to advocate for additional traffic safety resources in Valley Stream to protect the public.

Addressing concerns regarding speeding on Rockaway Avenue near the Wheeler Road School and on Corona Avenue near the James A. Dever School, Legislator Solages announced on Monday, Jan. 27 that he secured commitments from the Nassau County Police Department’s Fifth Precinct to increase enforcement by Problem Oriented Policing (POP) officers and assign enforcement officers as needed to conduct intensive patrols “until we see a marked improvement,” PD officials said.

In addition, Legislator Solages has been working with the Village of Valley Stream to bolster traffic safety and has secured capital resources for a forthcoming streetscape on Rockaway Avenue to make the road safer for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Later that evening, however, a man was fatally struck on Broadway in Valley Stream on a stretch of roadway that residents called “a speedway” in published reports, and the driver who struck him fled. Following that incident, additional Valley Stream homeowners have reached out to Legislator Solages’ office with reports of property damage they suffered as a result of additional hit-and-run incidents.

“As much as we can try to engineer better roads and enforce traffic laws more stringently, each of us has a role to play in this by being more considerate of each other and especially pedestrians when we are behind the wheel,” Legislator Solages said. “The three fundamentals of solving these traffic safety issues are enforcement, engineering, and education, and I will continue to closely monitor conditions in Valley Stream and across the Third District. Now more than ever, I thank the Nassau County Police Department’s Fifth Precinct for working so diligently to protect us, and I urge everyone to slow down and drive carefully.”
