Can high school students crack a computer challenge in under seven hours? Stony Brook University’s Office for Research and Innovation will be bringing more than 80 students from 12 Long Island School Districts together to find out. The students will compete in teams of four to solve an assigned computer coding challenge utilizing Java, Python, and AI tools. This Hackathon will provide students with opportunities to solve a specific computer programming or software problem that can help them develop technical skills and apply them to a practical computer program.
Throughout the event, students will receive mentoring from Stony Brook undergraduate, graduate, and postdoc computer science students. They will then present their creations to an interdisciplinary panel of judges. Prizes, consisting of gift cards to both local and popular chain restaurants (Cheesecake Factory, Applebee’s, Panera, McDonalds, Shake Shack, Chick-Fil-A) and Stony Brook merchandise, have been generously donated by local companies and on-campus organizations.
Both Nassau and Suffolk counties are represented with students from Baldwin, Jericho, Kings Park, Levittown, Longwood, Mineola, Mt. Sinai, Plainview Old Bethpage, Port Jefferson, Rocky Point, Three Village and Westhampton Beach school districts.
This event is being hosted by the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) and the Office for Research and Innovation Workforce Development. The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science will provide the students with a lesson on how to effectively demonstrate and discuss their innovations.
