For the second consecutive year, Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been named one of America's top-tier hospitals, as announced by Healthgrades, a leading healthcare evaluation resource. The prestigious recognition places SBUH in the top 1 percent of hospitals nationwide. SBUH stands as the sole Long Island hospital to earn a coveted spot among the nation's 50 Best Hospitals, with Stony Brook Southampton Hospital also sharing in the honor.
"Stony Brook's steady ascent in rankings over the years is testament to our steadfast commitment to delivering the highest standards of care to our patients,” said Dr. William A. Wertheim, interim executive vice president of Stony Brook Medicine.
Healthgrades' rigorous evaluation process for 2024 assessed risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates across more than 30 conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The analysis revealed considerable discrepancies in hospital performance, emphasizing the importance of seeking care at top-rated institutions. Healthgrades estimates that if all hospitals performed similarly to America's 50 Best Hospitals between 2020 and 2022, over 176,000 lives could have potentially been saved.
Dr. Brad Bowman, Healthgrades' chief medical officer and head of data science, commended Stony Brook University Hospital for its leadership and unwavering dedication to delivering high-quality care.
"As one of America's 50 Best Hospitals, Stony Brook University Hospital is setting a standard for quality care nationwide, ensuring superior outcomes for patients in their community," he said.
Stony Brook University Hospital has also received several national Healthgrades Excellence Awards, five-star national ratings, and top-five rankings in New York State across various specialties, including cardiac care, neurosciences, cranial neurosurgery, stroke care, and gastrointestinal care.
