The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the storm that is expected to hit Long Island tonight and continue into Tuesday afternoon.

The NWS sys that heavy snowfall is expected with total accumulations of 5 to 10 inches with wind gusts up to 40 MPH in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Some news outlets are calling for up to a foot of snow when it’s all over.

The NWS is calling for one to two inches of snow per hour to fall between 5am and noon on Tuesday. Temperatures will be in the 30s.

The weather services are still calling for rain tonight that will transition over to snow in the morning.

Travel could be very difficult with hazardous conditions impacting the morning commute on Tuesday. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

There is also a coastal flood warning in effect from 8am until 5pm on Tuesday for Suffolk County. There may be localized minor flooding possible with the Tuesday Night high tide.
