TRAVEL ADVISORY: Upcoming Closures on the Loop Parkway in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County

Written by Chris Boyle  |  14. February 2024

The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists of the following closures, weather permitting, on the Loop Parkway in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, to facilitate the ongoing rehabilitation of the drawbridge over Long Creek.

  • On Monday, February 19 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., lanes in both directions are subject to intermittent closures at the drawbridge.  Motorists should follow the instructions of the construction personnel for their safety and the safety of the highway work crew.
  • On Tuesday, February 20, between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., both directions of the parkway will be closed. There will be a signed detour route via the Long Beach Bridge (Long Beach Boulevard connecting the City of Long Beach and the Village of Island Park) for access between the Long Beach barrier island and Long Island’s mainland. In case of inclement weather, this operation will take place on Wednesday, February 21.

The electronic message signs near the bridge will display additional closure updates and information.

NYSDOT is also reminding motorists that the speed limit in this work zone has been lowered from 55 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour.

Motorists are urged to plan accordingly and drive responsibly in work zones.  Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.  Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
