Jericho, NY - February 22, 2017 - Get your cape ready and “celebrate the superhero in you” during Kids' Carnival for a Cure, where attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superhero to recognize the courage and true heroism it takes to live with diabetes every day on March 5 inside Dave & Buster's at The Mall at the Source in Westbury.

“I am inspired by children with type 1 diabetes. These children have to grow up too fast.  I understand the day to day struggles both physically and socially, I have been there,” said Dara Melnick, who has type 1 diabetes and is one of three event co-chairs, along with Iris Feldman and Edra Tepper.  “It is a day to celebrate the obstacles that these children face. They are true superheroes with amazing powers. Anything is possible as long as you work hard at it.”

The annual event, to be held from 1 pm to 4 pm, raises money for the Diabetes Research Institute and its mission to find a cure for diabetes.

Each year this family-friendly event attracts hundreds and is a wonderful opportunity for children of all ages to play the latest video games, cue up for pool, strike out some bowling pins, bounce on inflatables and win some incredible prizes like a week-long trip anywhere in the world; an Apple TV; an iPad; and an Apple Watch.

Attendees will get to meet Spiderman and Wonder Woman, while also enjoying a spectacular array of food for lunch along with the crowd favorite of Cold Stone Ice Cream for dessert.

The tickets are $250 for a family of four; $100 for an adult; and $50 for a child.

“It is a great day to gather families and friends together who are affected by the disease and involve them in the fight to find a cure,” Melnick said.  “The Kids' Carnival combines fun and a very important message of hope and support for diabetes research.”

She added, “I would like to also recognize the incredible efforts of its great volunteers and there are tons of activities for parents, children and the kid at heart.”

Bowling & Billiard Sponsors are Susan and Mitchell Rubinstein and family as well as Roberta and Bruce Waller and family; Typhoon Park Sponsor is CareConnect Insurance Company Inc.; and Family Fun Sponsor is Crestwood Country Day Camp and School.

About the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation
The mission of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation is to provide the Diabetes Research Institute with the funding necessary to cure diabetes now. The Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine leads the world in cure-focused research. As the largest and most comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. Researchers have already shown that transplanted islet cells allow patients to live without the need for insulin therapy. Some study participants have maintained insulin independence for more than 10 years. The DRI is now building upon these promising outcomes by developing a DRI BioHub, a bioengineered “mini organ” that mimics the native pancreas. While various BioHub platforms are being tested in preclinical and clinical studies, the DRI is also developing strategies to eliminate the need for anti-rejection drugs and reset the immune system to block autoimmunity.
