Mineola, NY - February 22, 2017 - Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and the MWBE Advisory Committee held their monthly meeting yesterday, February 21, at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, in Mineola.  Over 20 representatives from minority and women organizations attended as well as many MWBE business owners who are interested in opportunities to contract with the County.

The meeting’s Keynote Speaker, Kenneth Arnold, Nassau County Assistant to the Commissioner of Public Works, spoke about the County’s Request for Proposal process (the RFP), and provided many useful tips on preparing successful bids. Nineteen new upcoming County opportunities were presented to the Committee for dissemination to the MWBE community. Two issues were raised impeding greater MWBE participation; the high bonding requirements and the lengthy New York Certification process for new firms wanting minority certification. The Comptroller’s Office will consider steps to help lessen these issues.

“The MWBE Advisory Committee is a dynamic open public forum with the single mission to help Minority, Women and Veteran firms in Nassau County find business opportunities,” said Comptroller George Maragos. “Nassau County is committed to double the contract opportunities towards MWBE firms.”

The next MWBE Advisory Meeting will be held in March.
