With a budget of $200,000, the Suffolk County Veterans Emergency Assistance Commission, established in 2023, is set to initiate the allocation of funds to veterans in need, specifically for the procurement of home heating oil.
Tasked with determining eligibility criteria, the commission comprises figures within the veterans’ community, including Marcelle Leis, the commissioner of the Department of Veterans’ Services.
“Suffolk County boasts the highest veteran population in New York State,” said Leis. “Recognizing the necessity, especially among veterans on fixed incomes, to aid in covering the escalating costs of home heating, the Suffolk County Legislature's enactment of the Veterans Home Heating Assistance bill underscores our commitment to supporting those who served our nation.”
Leslie Kennedy, Suffolk Legislator, emphasized the significance of assisting veterans within her district facing financial constraints due to soaring living expenses.
"Our objective with this Commission is twofold: to alleviate the financial burden for our veterans, particularly those on fixed incomes, and to ensure their safety and well-being," Kennedy said.
