Summer Camp Employee Admits to Embezzling $250,000 for Personal Use
Melanie Bergstedt, 47, a former employee of a summer camp on Long Island has admitted to embezzling $250,000 from the camp from 2016 to 2020.
Bergstedt, who worked in the Commack summer camp's financial department, used the money to pay for personal expenses such as mortgage payments, credit card bills, and vacations.
The embezzlement was discovered when the camp's director noticed irregularities in the financial records.
The employee has pleaded gulty to second-degree grand larceny in Suffolk County Supreme Court on Wednesday, March 1.
The camp has implemented new financial safeguards to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
“This defendant placed her own greed above the welfare of children by stealing money earmarked for a summer camp and pocketed it for her own personal use,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a statement.
“If you steal from local businesses, you are also harming the Suffolk County community at large. Accordingly, you will be held to account for your actions and legally forced to repay the money you stole.”
Bergstedt is scheduled to be sentenced on May 8.
