Long Island Paranormal Investigators: Uncovering LI's Ghouls and Ghosts, One Haunt at a Time
Long Island Paranormal Investigators (LIPI) is a group of spooky gumshoes who have been steadfastly uncovering Long Island's dark and macabre history, one haunt at a time.
Originally founded in 2003 and comprised of approximately 30 members, over the years LIPI have turned their collective attention upon a plethora of creepy phenomena over the years according to the group's founder, Mike Cardinuto, often re-visiting allegedly haunted locations numerous times to gather evidence.
“Between Suffolk County and Nassau, we probably have about 65 to 70 locations that we’ve investigated,” he said. “Everyone thinks you just walk into a house, and say ‘Yeah, it’s haunted’ and capture stuff. It’s not like that at all. It takes time and effort. We’ve captured evidence at every single one of them."
Cardinuto, 45, and his group have looked into countless haunts on Long Island, some well-known, some obscure; some of the places they have plied their ghastly trade are the abandoned Kings Park Psychiatric Center, Mount Misery in Melville, Sweet Hollow Road, Katie’s Bar in Smithtown, the Nathaniel Rogers House in Bridgehampton, and many, many more.
LIPI often investigate locations for private clients, but often they will allow curious members of the public to tag along on their ghostbusting duties, educating them on both the history of the haunt and their methods of rooting out the spirits inhabiting them; these include EMF readers, AM/FM radio sweepers, digital cameras, and a motion sensor-activated music box that can be set off if it senses something unseen walking - or floating - by.
Members also use equipment to try and pick up electronic voice phenomenon (EVP), a radio frequency that is said to be able to pick up the creepy utterances of ghosts.
Evidence is harshly critiqued by the members of the group, who do their best to debunk or disprove their own findings in order to root out the scientifically explained and isolate the incidents of true hauntings.
