Southold Historical Museum is pleased to present a free lecture as part of its winter series titled: “Storms, Shipwrecks, Lifesavers & Lightkeepers: The History of the Fire Island Lighthouse” at 1:00 PM on Thursday, Mar. 27.

Join local author Angela Reich as she discusses the fascinating stories of shipwrecks off Long Island’s treacherous shoreline, along with the lighthouses that provided guidance and served as lookouts, and the brave men of the Life Saving Service who risked all in death-defying rescue missions.

The docents at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse and Fire Island Lighthouse joined with Southold Historical Museum to bring this special presentation.

Ms. Angela Reich is a Fire Island Lighthouse docent and author of Shipwreck of Hopes—a novel inspired by the 1850 wreck of the ship Elizabeth. This historical event played a pivotal role in shaping the early Life-Saving Service, led by local residents who patrolled our shores and safeguarded maritime traffic along the nation’s busiest shipping lanes near New York Harbor.

A book sale will follow the presentation. Books are $20 cash only, with 20% of the proceeds generously donated to Southold Historical Museum.

This event will take place at the Ann Currie-Bell House at Southold Historical Museum’s Maple Lane Complex at 55200 Main Road, Southold. Donations gladly accepted.

Q&A will follow.
