(MINEOLA and HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) – During a recent Nassau County Legislature meeting, Nassau County Legislator Kevan M. Abrahams (D – Freeport) honored Jeffrey and Cheyenne Spencer, founders of Helping Hands of Hempstead for their steadfast commitment to giving back to the community.
Approximately eight years ago, the father-daughter duo and lifelong Hempstead residents began hosting events with their own money, including safe Halloween parties for children, sit-down Thanksgiving dinners, holiday turkey giveaways for families in need, and more. For Jeffrey, a Hempstead Fire Department firefighter, and Cheyenne, an ophthalmic technician, that was the starting point for Helping Hands, which has grown to encompass numerous events throughout the year, including an annual Christmas toy giveaway and dinner for hundreds of community members.
Legislator Abrahams presented Jeffrey and Cheyenne with Nassau County Legislature Citations in recognition of their impressive efforts during the Legislature’s annual Black History Month celebration on Monday, Feb. 27.
“During Black History Month, it is important to celebrate individuals that have made their mark not just in the last year, but time and time again,” Legislator Abrahams said. “Through their philanthropic mission, Jeffrey and Cheyenne Spencer do so much to spread joy, and it was a pleasure to recognize them at the Legislature and thank them for all they do to brighten the lives of so many deserving families in our community.”
