Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Dan Panico is asking residents to register now for the 17th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven's Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 17 at various locations throughout the Town of Brookhaven. It is part of a national effort that draws over 5 million volunteers in more than 20,000 communities across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and more. Register online. For more information, call the Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management at 631-451-TOWN (8696).

The facts on litter are sobering. According to the most recent litter study there are more than 50 billion pieces of litter on the ground. That’s 152 pieces of litter for every American. But there is good news. In the past ten years, littering along US roadways is down 54%! Last year alone, over 64,000 clean-up events were held in the US, resulting in over 146,600 ACRES of parks, public lands, waterways, trails and playgrounds cleaned up by volunteers like YOU!

Supervisor Panico said, “The Great Brookhaven Clean Up is one of our most popular and important events of the year. It is a good opportunity for people to remove trash and make a difference in their community. This event has been a great success thanks to the efforts of our residents and their dedication to keeping Brookhaven clean.”

Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. The supplies will be available for pick up at the Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management’s third floor office at Town Hall during regular business hours (9:00 am to 4:30 pm) from May 5 to May 16. Appointments are necessary and must be scheduled during the registration process. Brookhaven Town Hall is located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.
