Recently, Brookhaven Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig and Suffolk County Legislator James Mazzarella were on hand for the grand opening dedication ceremony of the new Mastic-Shirley Long Island Railroad Plaza Shelter.
Councilwoman Dunne Kesnig has been calling for the remodeling of the station for many years. The new station features a covered waiting area, brighter LED security lighting, security cameras, new benches, disability ramp access to the platform, new station electronic signs and Public Address equipment, offering a new look for LIRR travelers.
“A new station shelter was desperately needed for many, many years. I’d say it’s more than a facelift. I just hope and pray that the community and the people who come here let it stay this way,” said Councilwoman Dunne Kesnig.
Still on the Town of Brookhaven’s list of things to do are to get the LIRR to establish a non-traffic blocking grade crossing at William Floyd Parkway at Mastic Road to relieve enormous traffic congestion in the morning and evening.
