Weather Alert

ELEVATED RISK OF FIRE SPREAD Increasing northwest winds and drying low levels will create conditions more conducive for fire spread today into early this evening. Relative humidity is expected to decrease to near 25 to 30 percent this afternoon into early this evening, while wind gusts increase to 35 to 45 mph. An isolated gust to 50 mph will be possible. These conditions would likely aid fire spread if ignition occurs. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. The annual statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued. For more information about wildfire danger and wildfire prevention, please visit the New York Department of Environmental Conservation website at http://dec.ny.gov/environmental- protection/wildfires. This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions and has been developed in coordination with state fire and land management officials. On Tuesday, March 11, participants in a “Shed the Meds” event at the Syosset Public Library, hosted by Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker (D – Plainview) and the Nassau County Police Department’s Second Precinct, were forced to evacuate after the Library received a bomb threat at approximately at 6:15 p.m.

Following this incident, Deputy Minority Leader Drucker and the Second Precinct are scheduled to return to the Library on Tuesday, April 29 to host another Shed the Meds event from 5 – 7:30 p.m.

In response to the incident, Deputy Minority Leader Drucker issued the following statement:

“I was incredibly disappointed and angered that someone would disrupt a worthwhile event like Shed the Meds with a cowardly, unsubstantiated and anonymous bomb threat,” Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker (D – Plainview) said. “I implore the perpetrator or perpetrators of this selfish, pointless act to turn themselves in, and for anyone who has information about the incident to call the Second Precinct at 516-571-6200.”

“Despite having to evacuate, the Syosset community was not deterred, and we were still able to fill more than seven garbage bags with unwanted pills for safe disposal,” Deputy Minority Leader Drucker added. “To meet the tremendous demand that was demonstrated for this service, I am pleased to share that we will be returning to the Library on Tuesday, April 29 so that anybody who missed our last event due to the evacuation can do their part to protect the environment and keep unwanted drugs from falling into the wrong hands.”
