AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING An Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for the following counties: Nassau and Suffolk. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Annual Gurwin Photo Contest Amateur Photographers Encouraged to Enter.

Commack, NY - March 27, 2015 - Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest.  Each year, the contest offers amateur photographers an opportunity to enter photographs in ten categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Computer Manipulated and Student.  A maximum of 7 entries per photographer at $5 each will be accepted.
 
Photographs will be judged by a panel of professional judges at the close of the contest, and winners will be chosen based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center.  Winning photographers will be awarded various cash prizes at a reception held in June, and winning photos will be enlarged and permanently displayed at the Gurwin Center for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to the facility.  The deadline for submissions is April 15.
 
The Center’s renowned contest is made possible by the Tiffen Company (Hauppauge), long-time sponsors of the contest in memory of Helen and Nat Tiffen, the company’s founder and a former Gurwin resident.  The Tiffen Company is a leading manufacturer of glass filters and other fine products for digital, still, video, motion pictures and television.
