Champions of Diversity Month recognizes individuals who promote diversity through education and community involvement in Suffolk County.
In November 2022, the Suffolk County Legislature approved a resolution sponsored by Legislator Manuel Esteban Sr, Esq. to designate April as “Champions of Diversity Month.” In addition, an annual initiative to recognize an individual from each legislative district who promotes and demonstrates the appreciation of diversity, inclusion and cultural competence.
Starting in 2023, and continuing every year forward, at the first General Meeting in April the selected “Champions of Diversity” will be publicly recognized through a legislative pronouncement for their contribution in promoting positive behavior that demonstrates the appreciation for diversity and a deep understanding and appreciation of others.
Theresa DiPietto was named as a Champion of Diversity for Suffolk County District 14, one of a number of people who were recognized this month.
DiPietto can also be found feeding families in need throughout Babylon Town for every holiday including during the pandemic, through a nonprofit she founded - Hope Floats Long Island Inc.
With Hope floats Long Island Inc. she has helped many businesses and families working alongside the award-winning NBC show called George to the Rescue which she has been a part of since Season two (they are now on season 13).
Theresa has organized and executed the Babylon Village Pride parade for the past three years since its inception.
DiPietto has a long list of other accomplishments as a volunteer.
She has been helping her community since Superstorm Sandy, sitting on the Long Island Long Term Recovery Group, Health and Welfare Council and is a member of Friends of Long Island and Vision Long Island. She is certified with the American Red Cross for Sheltering, and is a trained Disaster Case Manager through Catholic Charities via the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
Another champion was District 18’s CUP Café nominated by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi.
Cup CafeCUP Café's mission is to provide a positive empowering environment promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion. They offer meaningful engagement, vocational opportunities, and employment for everyone, especially those who need support and mentorship. With their culinary classes, catering business and artisan baked goods they donate all net profits from the café to support community programs for people with autism and other developmental disabilities.
