On March 28 a vacant house located at 45 Dyke Road in Setauket was demolished to preserve the property for open space. The property is owned by Suffolk County and the demolition was handled by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management staff. The property includes environmentally sensitive wetlands adjacent to Little Bay.

“Overdevelopment can lead to environmental damage, increased traffic, and a negative impact on the overall quality of life in our suburban community,” said Brookhaven Town Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich. who was on hand for the demo. “I am particularly happy to be part of what I call ‘negative development,’ or the removal of a structure to allow for the conservation of land that is both beautiful and fragile.”

Kornreich thanked the Peconic Land Trust and Assemblyman Steve Englebright in their efforts to protect the area for future generations to enjoy.
