Earlier this month the Long Island Railroad station in Huntington reopened the south parking lot after renovations were complete adding 29 new spots. This brought the total number of spots up to 253 spaces.

The project included a new accessible sidewalk on the east side of Fairground Avenue, drainage improvements, lighting improvements, resurfacing with new asphalt paving, reconstruction of the southern retaining wall, and the installation of EV conduits for the potential installation of electric vehicle charging stations.

The EV charging stations will be installed if funding becomes available to add such infrastructure in the future, according to a statement released by the town.

Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth thanked the town’s departments involved in the improvements who completed this project on what he called a shoestring budget.

“We are proud to deliver on this long-awaited renovation in the first few months of our administration but the best is yet to come,” he said.

Funding for the South Parking Lot renovation consisted of approximately $431,000 in Townwide Parking Lot repair funds from the Department of General Services, an additional $175,000 in funding approved by the Town Board in February 2021 and $140,000 in additional funding approved by the Town Board in June 2021.

Other projects are also in the works, according to Smyth.

“We anticipate moving forward on more commuter infrastructure upgrades at the Huntington train station with recently approved grant funding," he said.
