AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following areas: All five boroughs of New York City, and Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. 65-Year-Old Retired NCPD Detective Fatally Struck in Auto Accident

Homicide Squad detectives report the details of a Fatal Auto Accident involving a pedestrian that occurred on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 3:40 pm in Carle Place.

The victim in this fatal auto accident has been identified as retired Det. Joseph G. Skowronski, 65, from the Nassau County Police Department.

Carle Place, NY - April 22, 2016 - Homicide Squad detectives report the details of a Fatal Auto Accident involving a pedestrian that occurred on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 3:40 pm in Carle Place.

According to detectives, while attempting to cross Old Country Road on foot from the north side to the south side in the vicinity of Cherry Lane, retired Det. Joseph G. Showronski, 65, of Mineola, from the Nassau County Police Department was struck by an eastbound 1995 Nissan Maxima driven by an 18 year old male.

As a result of the collision retired Det. Showronski suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, who remained at the scene, was not injured. His vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks.

The accident, which was deemed to be non-criminal, continues to be investigated.
