Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Thursday night. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Recently, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously passed Legislation aimed to thank Healthcare workers for all they have done for the residents of Suffolk County throughout the pandemic. IR 1174 Introduced by Freshman Legislator Anthony Piccirillo of Holtsville, and co-sponsored by more than five Legislators reduces the Green Key card rate for Suffolk County parks and beaches for Healthcare workers who reside in Suffolk County. The Legislation reduces the Green Key rate by 50% for those who are Healthcare workers. “Healthcare workers in Suffolk County have gone above and beyond over this past year putting their health and mental well being on the line for our residents, this is just a small gesture to say thank you” said Legislator Piccirillo.

The Green Key Card will cost $15 for all Healthcare workers. The reduced rate will for a one period from May 1st, 2021 to April 30th, 2022. Each Green Key is valid for three years and can be acquired by going to one of the designated County Parks sites and showing a valid work id. “Healthcare workers have worked exceptionally hard under difficult circumstances, and I hope they accept this small gesture as a token of our appreciation” said the Legislator. “As the weather begins to get warmer, I hope that all of our healthcare workers in Suffolk County will take advantage of this program and explore our county parks and beaches” added the Legislator.

In addition to this bill, Legislator Piccirillo sponsored two bills aimed to honor Healthcare workers. Earlier this year he passed a bill to honor Healthcare workers from each Legislative District every year during the June General Meeting. In 2020, Legislator Piccirillo passed legislation designating June in Suffolk County as Healthcare Heroes Month. On every June 8th, the H. Lee Dennison Building is lit up blue in Honor of all of the sacrifice’s healthcare workers have made during the coronavirus. “While we were told to stay home these heroes went to work everyday and put themselves and their families in harms way. I sincerely thank all of our healthcare professionals and appreciate all that they have done and continue to do for us” said Piccirillo.
