Legislator Solages Urges Public to Aid in Search for Person who Attacked Elmont Woman with Acid in Her Driveway
Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D - Lawrence) has urged residents to call police with any information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the man responsible for a gruesome acid attack that gravely wounded a 21-year-old Hofstra University student in the driveway of her Elmont home.
The assault occurred at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday March 17. According to the Nassau County Police Department, Nafiah Ikram, 21, while walking on the driveway of her Arlington Avenue residence, was approached from behind by an unknown male. The male suspect was carrying a white colored cup containing a dark colored substance which he then threw at the victim’s face. The suspect, who is described as approximately 6’2” tall, skinny build, wearing a black colored sweatshirt with a hood and wearing gloves, fled eastbound on Arlington Avenue.
According to a GoFundMe page (warning - graphic, distressing images), Ikram sustained severe burns to her face, eyes, chest, arms and lungs and was hospitalized for several weeks. She has lost nearly all her eyesight and it is unclear how much - if any - can be regained. Earlier today, Legislator Solages applauded Crime Stoppers for doubling the reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case to $20,000.
“After enduring a vicious attack that gravely injured their daughter and violated the sanctity of this family’s home in such an unthinkable way, the most important thing we can do as a community is come forward with any information that can help police solve this case,” Legislator Solages said. “During my meetings with Nafiah and her family, they have displayed tremendous courage and resolve amidst this nightmarish ordeal, and I will not rest until the individual responsible for this heartless assault is at long last brought to justice.”
Legislator Solages urges anyone with information is urged to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls are kept confidential.
