OCEARCH, a shark research group, announced that they have detected the tracking signal - also known as the "ping" - of Simon, a 434 pound, a 9-foot, 6-inch juvenile White Shark off of the coast of Long Island on the morning of Tuesday, May 2.
The ping was detected close to the Bay Shore coast around 10:30 a.m., OCEARCH noted. A ping occurs when the dorsal fin of a shark tagged with a tracking device emerges from the surface of the water.

Simon was originally captured, tagged, and released off of the coast of Georgia back in December 2022. Tuesday's ping represents the closest the shark has ever been spotted to land, OCEARCH said.
