A new concept in food service is bringing back a retro idea - the automat.
Restaurateur Stratis Morfogen took the automat and adapted it with today’s tech to create something new in food service. His new restaurant Brooklyn Dumpling Shop recently opened a location in Garden City, which has been in the works for over a year.
Yet to be seen is if Long Islanders will adapt to the cool concept that first launched in Spring 2021 in New York City.
As the name implies, this place is about the dumplings like their traditional pork buns, shrimp and veggie shumai and kung pao chicken. You can also get dumplings in broth or potstickers. Specialty dumplings include buffalo chicken, lamb gyro, cheesesteak and mac & cheese.
On Yelp, Nancy B, from Malverne, called it an “interesting concept.”
“It's basically fast food as there are very few tables,” she said. “You order your food from a kiosk and after it's cooked it comes out through a window. They're in a strip mall so there's plenty of parking.”
Valerie B, from New Hyde Park, also commented on the way food is served at Brooklyn Dumpling Shop.
“This is a very different restaurant compared to everything in the area,” she said. “It's automated so you go in, order on a screen, pay by debit/credit and wait for the food to come out of a drawer. This is an Introvert's dream come true!”
