Troublesome Trickster Busted by NCPD After Using "Sleight of Hand" Trick to Steal $17,000 Watch from Jeweler

The Major Case Bureau reports the arrests of a Flushing male for a Grand Larceny that occurred on Friday, April 19, 2024 at 12:17 p.m. in Manhasset.
 
According to Burglary Pattern Squad Detectives, defendant Yaorong Wan, 49, of 135-11 40th Road, entered London Jewelers located at 2046 Northern Boulevard, distracted the salesperson and used a “sleight of hand” trick to remove a Chopard Watch valued at over $17,000 and exited the store. 
 
An Arrest Warrant and Search Warrant was issued by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.  
 
The Search Warrant was executed at 135-11 40th Road on May 3, 2024 by Nassau Detectives, the NYPD Major Case Squad and the U.S.  Marshalls Fugitive Task Force.  Pursuant to the execution of the search warrant, the stolen Chopard watch was recovered inside the defendant’s residence along with proceeds from thefts in other jurisdictions.  Defendant Wan was placed under arrest on May 24, 2024 by Nassau Detectives in NYC. 
 
The defendant is wanted for similar jewelry thefts by deception throughout the United States. There is an active Interpol Red Notice and an active arrest warrant for the defendant in the Republic of Korea for a $332,000.00 theft of jewelry that took place in Seoul, Korea on September 30, 2018. The defendant entered the United States illegally on December 29, 2023 at the border in San Diego, California and was arrested. He was subsequently released after pleading asylum; his next scheduled Federal court date is on January 30, 2025. 
 
Defendant Wan is being charged with one count of Grand Larceny 3rd degree and was arraigned at First District Court on Sunday, May 5, 2024 and was remanded.  His next court date is today, May 6, 2024.
