Brentwood Teen Sentenced For Rape and Robbery
Brentwood, NY - May 11, 2016 - A Brentwood teen was sentenced to 12 years in prison today for the brutal rape and sodomy of 16 year old girl in a wooded area near the Brentwood Country Club one year ago, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.
The mother of the victim addressed the court prior to sentencing and said Joel Escobar will never understand the effects of his crimes against her daughter “because he has no conscience”.
Escobar and his codefendant Jose Cornejo on the evening of May 29 last year committed the rape while a third teen, Bryan Larios of Brentwood, acted as a lookout. Cornejo is serving a 15 year prison sentence. Larios is awaiting trial.
Escobar pleaded guilty in March to rape in the first degree and two counts of criminal sexual act in the first degree. He also pleaded guilty to charges of robbery in the second degree for the theft of the victim’s cellphone.
The district attorney’s office recommended an 18 year sentence for Escobar.
Defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
