Old Bethpage Man Busted for DWI After Crashing His Car into 7-11 & Fleeing Scene, Cops Say

The Public Information Office reports the arrest of an Old Bethpage man for Driving While Intoxicated that occurred on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 5:14 pm in Bethpage.
 
According to detectives, Bureau of Special Operations Officers responded to 150 Main Street for a vehicle into a building. Upon arrival it was determined that a single vehicle had struck the 7-11 store front window pane, causing it to break. The operator of the vehicle had fled the scene in a red Toyota 4Runner prior to police arrival. A short time later, the fleeing vehicle was involved in a collision with a 2017 Grey Subaru Sedan being operating by a 46-year-old female at the intersection of Conklin Ave and Main Street in Farmingdale.
 
During the investigation, officers observed a red 2000 Toyota 4Runner that matched the description of the vehicle that left scene commit multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law Infractions and conducted a stop on Hicksville Road near the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike. The investigation revealed the driver, defendant Andrew Malitzis, 61, of 10 Lucille Lane with watery eyes, an odor of an alcohol emanating from his breath and to be unsteady on his feet resulting in positive results on the Standardized Field Sobriety Test. During the investigation the defendant threatened the lives of officers at scene. Defendant Malitzis was placed under arrest. No injuries were reported. 
 
Defendant is charged with two counts of DWI and Driving While Ability Impaired, Criminal Mischief 4th Degree, Menacing 3rd Degree, Making a Terroristic Threat and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations. He will be arraigned on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
