Waiters and servers race to the finish line at the North Fork Waiter Race sponsored by The Market.

Greenport, NY - May 18, 2016 - The 5th Annual North Fork Waiter Race takes place on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 10 am. Hosted by The Market, located at 44 Front Street, Greenport, this fun fast-paced event celebrates the entire North Fork hospitality industry.  It also celebrates Eastern Long Island Hospital’s Fitness Challenge which encourages community members to walk at least 10,000 steps a day.

The rules are simple. Participants must reach a finish line by walking as fast as possible while balancing a filled stemmed glass on a serving tray. The contents of the glass will be provided by beverage sponsor Montauk Lemonade. Proceeds benefit Eastern Long Island Hospital’s Physical Therapy and Fitness program.  Spectators are welcome.  Come on down and cheer on your favorite server.   Sponsor a waiter.

“As the owner of a health food market since 1987, I believe we can all be our ‘best’ through good nutrition and regular exercise,” says Shelley Scoggin. “I invite everyone to get involved. The event is fun for both participants and spectators.  We are very fortunate to have ELIH at the heart of our community, providing top-rated care.”

The Great Waiter Race is based on a traditional race that began in Paris in 1904 to recognize the hospitality industry.  The concept has grown in popularity since its early beginnings.  Races now take place in more than 750 cosmopolitan cities around the world.

Applications and an entry fee of $50 are due by Friday, June 10th at 12 pm.  Participants are encouraged to raise funds and get sponsors for bigger prize money.  All monies raised will be divided between Eastern Long Island Hospital and the winners of the race.  Cash prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The monitored race kicks off at the ELIH Opportunity Shop on Main Street and ends in front of The Market.  To sign up for the race, contact The Market, 631.477.8803.
