Roosevelt, NY - May 18, 2018 - The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of two men for a Robbery that occurred on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 11:48pm in Roosevelt.
According to Robbery Squad Detectives, defendant Devon Williams, 22, of Jamaica and Richard Newton, 23, of Freeport did offer the male victim, 20, an acquaintance, a ride to where he wanted to go. Defendant Newton drove the 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor through the streets of Roosevelt instead of the victim’s requested location.
The victim requested to get out on Greenwich Street, when he attempted to exit the vehicle defendant Newton grabbed the victim by his shirt causing it to tear. The victim was able to get out of the vehicle but defendant Williams jumped out of the backseat of the car and grabbed the victim and punched him in the stomach demanding all of the victim’s possessions. Defendant Williams forcefully removed the victim’s shoes, jacket, watch, cell phone and an undetermined amount of US currency.
The victim was able to run and hide until the defendants left the scene and then asked for assistance from a homeowner on E. Pennywood Avenue to contact Police.
A short time later, Thursday, May 17, 2018 at approximately 12:20am, Officers observed the suspects driving said vehicle in Freeport. Officers attempted a safe vehicle stop, but the defendants refused to stop. The defendant’s vehicle struck assisting Freeport Officers unmarked police car resulting in the vehicle to come to a stop.
Defendant Newton was arrested at the scene on N. Bayview Avenue Freeport. Defendant Williams fled the scene on foot and was located on Terrace Avenue where he continued to refuse Officers lawful orders causing an Officer to deploy his taser. The defendant was then placed under arrest on Terrace Avenue. The search incident to arrest revealed baggies containing a greenish-brown leafy substance believed to be marijuana.
Defendant Devon Williams was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. He is charged with Robbery 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree and two counts of Unlawful Possession for Marijuana. He will be arraigned as soon as medically practical. Defendant Richard Newton is charged with Robbery 2nd Degree and will be arraigned on Thursday, May 17, 2018 in First District Court 99 Main Street Hempstead.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
