On Thursday, May 19, New York City health authorities announced a potential case of Monkeypox. The patient is currently in isolation at Bellevue Hospital, where they are awaiting the results of tests confirming it is the rare disease.

An unusual amount of cases of Monkeypox have been identified in Europe and Canada. One patient in Massachusetts is also reported to have the virus after visiting Montreal.

Monkeypox is similar to smallpox, although it is less severe and can be treated with an antiviral drug.
