AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT MONDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Sunday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Taxi Driver Seriously Injured in Motor Vehicle Crash with Bus

Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a Centereach man last evening.

Bohemia, NY - May 21st, 2014 - Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a Centereach man last evening.

Michael Lupo was driving a 2003 Ford for Islandwide Taxi eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway when his vehicle struck the rear of a Suffolk County Transit bus that was stopping for a red light at Orville Drive at 6:52 p.m.  

Lupo, 33, who was treated at the scene by members of the Community Ambulance Company of Sayville, was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is being treated for severe leg and chest injuries.

Cecilia Ortiz-Lopez, 65, of Babylon, the driver of the bus, and a male passenger were not injured. The bus was inspected at the scene by the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section. The taxi was impounded for a safety check.
 
The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
