Albany, NY - May 23, 2017 - Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo (R,C,I,Ref-New Suffolk) today showed his support for people with disabilities at Albany’s annual Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day. Disabilities Awareness Day is celebrated in Albany each year and gives legislators, family members, care providers and doctors the opportunity to come together and discuss the various issues faced by people suffering from disabilities. Palumbo and the Assembly Republican Conference members have been strong advocates of people suffering from disabilities, fighting to restore $90 million in funding to the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) in 2013.
Last year they held 11 statewide forums where they met with family members, care workers, and people with developmental disabilities. In January they unveiled their findings in the C.A.R.E.S. Plan as well as presenting solutions and recommendations. Their findings can be found here.
“Protecting the rights of people with disabilities is among my top priorities in Albany,” said Palumbo. “I always enjoy days like today when I get the opportunity to talk directly with those living with disabilities, their family members and caregivers. It helps me better understand the obstacles they face on a daily basis and what I can do as a legislator to help make their lives easier. As the legislative session draws to an end next month, I will keep in mind everything I learned today.”
