The New York State Board of Regents' decision in April 2023 that all public schools in the state be banned from using Native American names, logos, and mascots, the New York State Department of Education (NYSED) this week have released their official guidelines on the implementation of the ban, including putative measures for failure to comply.

These punishments range in severity, with a "last resort" consisting of an offending school school losing state funding.

The ban will affect 12 Long Island school districts, including Massapequa, Comsewogue, and Brentwood.

Public schools in the state have until June 30, 2025 to comply with the ban.
