Shirley, NY - May 29th, 2013 - The National Center for Family Literacy awarded $500 to the Community Family Literacy Project. It was used to purchase children’s books for the English for Speakers of Other Languages Family Night and Reading Buddies Program. The Reading Buddies Program included the professional staff of the Teen Department of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library and fourteen local teenagers. These teenagers volunteered to read with toddlers and school age children over a 10-week period. Some of the readings took place at the William Floyd High School where the Community Family Literacy Project offers evening classes to its adult students. The adult students bring their children into an early English immersion environment. These children will get a boost in their language and cognitive skills.
Great things are happening at the Community Family Literacy Project, which is a not-for-profit organization. In cooperation with the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Library, this program is reaching out to make sure all children enter school with the early literacy experiences needed for learning to take place. An investment in literacy is an investment in the community’s future.
