AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT MONDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Sunday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating an incident during which a teen was fatally stabbed in Mastic today.

Update - May 30, 2015 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a man in connection with the stabbing death of Trevor Bender on May 29, 2015. Homicide Squad detectives arrested Michael Dennis, 19, of Mastic and charged him with Manslaughter. Dennis is being held overnight at the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on May 31.

Mastic, NY - May 30, 2015 - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating an incident during which a teen was fatally stabbed in Mastic today.

Trevor Bender was a passenger in a car that was stuck in traffic on Mastic Road when he and the driver became involved in a verbal dispute with a group standing at the corner of Mastic Road and Moriches Avenue. Bender and the driver, 18, got out of the car and approached the group who were known to them at approximately 5:10 p.m. During the dispute, a male stabbed Bender in the chest. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Bender, 17, of Mastic, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead.
