Port Jefferson, NY - June 10, 2016 - The Port Jefferson Senior Prom Committee is proud to announce this year’s Senior Prom will take place on June 27th at 8pm. An open house will be held from 4 -6pm for press and community to walk through and see the transformation of our school grounds.
After a tragic accident on Prom night in 1957, a group of concerned parents wanted to keep students close to home and safe. In June of 1958 our amazing tradition began with the first themed prom held in the transformed gym at the Port Jefferson High School. The first theme was "April in Paris" - completely designed and decorated by parents of the senior class.
Since then, the prom has been produced by the cooperative efforts of the senior class and the entire community. The annual top secret “theme” is voted on by senior parents who then begin a 10 month exercise of design, drawing, painting, and construction to create a virtual movie set. Cardboard, lumber and other accessories are used to create a night that the students and the community at large, will not soon forget. You can visit its Facebook page for more photos and a list of past themes.
The Prom committee receives no financial assistance from the school district and therefore must rely on literally thousands of volunteer hours and the gifts of various donors and sponsors. Thus far, through the generosity of these sponsors, its been able to keep this tradition alive for over 55 years.
