Two Canadians Arrested After Pulling $37,000 Elder Scam on Nassau County Resident

The Third Squad reports the arrest of two men for a Grand Larceny that occurred from Wednesday June 7, 2023 to Saturday June 10, 2023 in Mineola.
 
According to Detectives, an 86-year-old Nassau County resident was the victim of an Elder Scam; believing that a family member was in legal trouble and needed money. The victim withdrew $37,250 USC on three separate occasions from three different financial institutions: June 7, 2023 for $9,250 USC; June 8, 2023 for $18,000 USC and on June 9, 2023 for $10,000 USC.  On Saturday, June 10, 2023 the male victim was present at yet another financial institution attempting to withdraw more money, when a bank employee realized that the victim was involved in an Elder Scam and contacted Police.  Subsequent to the investigation, Detectives were able to place the two defendants under arrest at 12:50pm on Saturday, June 10, 2023 as they attempted to pick up another payment.  Arrested were:
  • Defendant Ryad Moussi, 21, of 8660 Rene-descrte Road Montreal, Canada and
  • Defendant Jonathan Caton, 21, of 12385 Clement-ader Avenue Montreal, Canada.
The Defendants are each charged with three counts of  Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, three counts of Conspiracy 5th Degree, three counts of Scheme to Defraud 2nd Degree, Attempted Grand Larceny 2nd and 3rd Degree and Attempted Scheme to Defraud 2nd Degree.  Defendant Moussi is additionally charged with Conspiracy 5th Degree and Defendant Caton is additionally charged with Attempted Conspiracy 5th Degree. 
 
They were arraigned on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
