Helen Keller Services Hosts Inspiring Day of Service at Helen Keller National Center in Port Washington, NY

Written by Chris Boyle  |  13. June 2024

Long Island area employees of the consulting firm Deloitte pitched in to help beautify the campus of the Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) in Port Washington on Friday, June 7, 2024 in their national Day of Service, held around the country and in our area.

Dozens of Deloitte professionals joined DeafBlind participants to beautify the Sands Point campus of Helen Keller Services as part of their National Day of Service in the US, called “Impact Day,” when Deloitte professionals connected in more than 1,200 social impact projects across 100 US cities to help create positive change and drive progress toward a more equitable and sustainable future for all.

“We have to work together because I can’t see what’s in front of me,” said Maricar Marquez, Supervisor, Independent Living at Helen Keller National Center. Maricar is Blind and Deaf and communicates through tactile sign language. “Other individuals let me know the information, like what color a flower is, and we work as a team. That’s really the point of this event.”

Deloitte volunteers engaged in a variety of activities to enhance the campus, including:

  • Planting vibrant flowers
  • Mulching and beautifying garden beds
  • Weeding and cleaning up the grounds
  • Revitalizing the walking/running track used by Helen Keller Services participants

“It’s important to give back to the community,” said Brian Leibman, with Deloitte. “We’re privileged to work at Deloitte, and we want to serve the community to help in whatever way we can. It’s an important mission for the firm.”
