Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a Long Beach man pleaded guilty today to the March 2022 shooting death of an Uber driver in Long Beach and to a separate hit-and-run that occurred in September 2021 that seriously injured a 73-year-old woman.
Shaun Teemer, 24, pleaded guilty before Judge Robert Bogle to charges of Murder in the Second Degree (an A-I felony) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C violent felony), as well as Leaving the Scene of an Incident without Reporting as a Felony (an E felony), and Tampering with Physical Evidence (an E felony). The defendant is expected to be sentenced to 20 years to life in prison when he returns to court on August 2, 2023.
The NCDA recommended a sentence of 25 years to life on the homicide and seven years in prison with five years’ post release supervision to run concurrently to the homicide sentence.
“Shaun Teemer is an extraordinarily violent defendant who has consistently broken the law,” DA Donnelly said. “Humberto Manual Francis-Hernandez was an innocent cab driver working in the early morning hours of March 19, 2022, when this defendant shot him in the head and arm and left him for dead. Sadly, the 37-year-old man passed away a few days later and left countless friends and family to mourn him. Just six months before that, this defendant struck a 73-year-old woman as she crossed an intersection in Long Beach and fled the scene. I’m thankful to my prosecutors and the members of the Nassau County and Long Beach police departments for bringing this violent defendant to justice.”
DA Donnelly said that on March 19, 2022, at approximately 2:24 a.m., the Long Beach Police Department received a 911 call for shots fired in the vicinity of 425 East Broadway in Long Beach.
When they arrived at the scene, police found a dark colored sedan with the trunk and front driver’s side door open, idling in the roadway.
As they approached the front door of 425 East Broadway, they discovered 37-year-old Humberto Manuel Francis-Hernandez with gunshot wounds to the head and arm, and multiple shell casings inside the vestibule.
Francis-Hernandez was taken to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in serious condition and went directly into surgery. His condition deteriorated after the surgery, and he was pronounced dead on March 23, 2022.
The investigation revealed that the deceased was employed by Uber and was picking up a rider in Long Beach at the time of the shooting. Shaun Teemer was identified as the shooter through various cell phone and other records requested as part of the investigation.
Teemer was arrested by members of the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad and the Long Beach Police Department on June 13, 2022, in Long Beach.
In the other prosecution, DA Donnelly said that Teemer was operating a rented 2020 Jeep Compass on E. Park Avenue at the intersection of Pacific Avenue when he struck a 73-year-old woman crossing southbound just after the pedestrian crosswalk on E. Park Avenue and damaged the rental vehicle’s passenger side view mirror. The defendant allegedly continued driving after he hit the victim and did not stop.
The victim suffered a large laceration to her forehead and a compound fracture to her leg. She was brought to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital where she subsequently required surgery.
Teemer later returned the damaged rental car after the incident and requested a replacement vehicle. The defendant told the manager that the vehicle’s passenger side view mirror was damaged by a basketball.
Teemer was arrested for this incident by members of the Long Beach Police Department on September 7, 2021, in Long Beach.
The homicide case is being prosecuted by Deputy Bureau Chief Daryl Levy of the Homicide Bureau. The vehicular case is being prosecuted by Deputy Bureau Chief Katie Zizza of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau. The defendant is represented by Michael DerGarabedian, Esq.
