Congressman Suozzi Participates in Annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity
Long Island, NY - June 18, 2018 - Congressman Tom Suozzi (D- Long Island, Queens) participated in the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity on Thursday evening at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
The game, which has been played almost every year since 1909, pits the Democrats against the Republicans for a casual and fun break in the Congressional routine.
“The Congressional Baseball Game is a great way for Democrats and Republicans to come together. It is a great thing to show the country that, in spite of intense negotiations over the budget or policy issues, we are human beings and we can spend time with each other and try and work together,” said Suozzi.
Of particular significance in this year’s game was the return to the field of House Majority Whip, Rep. Steve Scalise. Scalise was seriously wounded after being shot in a practice prior to the 2017 game. Fittingly, Scalise made the first out of the game.
More than a baseball game, this bipartisan rite of summer supports charities in the Washington, D.C. area including The Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, and the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund, in gratitude to the brave officers at the Republican practice shooting on June 14, 2017.
Suozzi, sporting the uniform of his hometown team, the New York Mets, contributed defensively to the Democrats 21-5 win over the Republicans. The record now stands at 39 wins for the Democrats, 39 wins for the Republicans, and one tie game. The 2019 Congressional Baseball Game promises to be a big one.
