Long Island Rail Road Expects a Normal Commute for Wednesday
Long Island, NY - June 22, 2016 - MTA Long Island Rail Road is expecting a normal AM Peak commute on Wednesday after Amtrak completed repairs on a broken signal that took three tracks out of service and caused train cancellations and delays during the Tuesday evening rush hour.
The signal failure shut down three tracks at Penn Station that the LIRR normally uses to stage and run eastbound service during the PM Peak. That left the Railroad with access to just six tracks and forced the cancelations of 21 trains while 38 operated with delays. Westbound service into Penn was suspended for a time.
LIRR service returned to normal as the PM Peak period wound down and fewer trains were needed. Amtrak, which is responsible for all maintenance inside Penn Station as well as the East River Tunnels, began repairs at about 3 p.m. and finished at 9 p.m.
